Step Inside One Fine Secret: Melbourne’s New Clean Beauty Destination
In the heart of the bustling Melbourne CBD, not far from the Bourke St Mall, you’ll find a secret oasis. Calming, light-filled and brimming with the best of Australian and international beauty, One Fine Secret is a new Melbourne clean beauty store.
Whether you come for skincare, makeup or to borrow a book from the “wellness library” (open to all who visit the store), One Fine Secret is more than just a beauty store. All of the brands carried at One Fine Secret are personally vetted by founders (and husband & wife duo), John & Kayla. “We require that all our products are free from known or suspected harmful ingredients, and the product first has to pass our strict healthy ingredient standards for us to consider it further. We look for brands that really impress and make us feel something special,” says Kayla. “We make sure that the organic and natural products are cruelty free, high-performing, filled with nourishing ingredients and feel beautiful to use. We also consider the eco and ethical aspects of the brand.”
Ethics are at One Fine Secret’s core, along with a desire to share that message with the world. One Fine Secret regularly hosts beauty, wellness & lifestyle workshops and events in their Melbourne space, with guest brand founders, authors and meditation masters headlining each event. “Some of my favourite experiences have been the events we’ve had in store with Founders of our beauty brands such as Mukti, Luk Beautifood and Aika. There’s always an amazing buzz in our space.”
You can sip on one of their organic teas whilst you browse the products and have a chat about what’s best suited to your skin. For those shopping via the One Fine Secret online store, tailored skincare and makeup advice is just a few clicks away. Co-founder Kayla is a certified makeup artist, and can help match you with the right products, from award-winning and internationally renowned certified organic and natural brands such as Inika Organic, Vapour Beauty, Ere Perez and more.
But a career in the beauty industry wasn’t always a natural choice for Kayla, who has background in hotel management & accounting. “I got to work with a range of inspirational entrepreneurs and small businesses making their mark on the world. These varied experiences helped me gain some valuable customer service and business skills that have definitely come in handy with One Fine Secret.”
Kayla’s first dive into clean beauty began several years ago when she attended a women’s wellness event, where Therese Kerr, an ambassador for Certified Organic Australia, founder of skincare brand The Divine Company (and also mother of supermodel Miranda Kerr) was a guest speaker. “It was the first time I was confronted with the concept that our mainstream beauty and personal care products were often littered with ingredients that were far less than ideal for our bodies. I was absolutely shocked, and was left inspired to dig deeper,” says Kayla. “I began switching out my own beauty and lifestyle products and became quite the label nerd. I had no idea that I’d eventually be helping others do the same and dedicating all my energy and passion to the clean beauty industry, it’s been such an amazing journey!”
“It seems like my passion for natural beauty and wellness, and desire to seek a new and more meaningful career role aligned at the same time, and really just led to me taking the leap. I had experienced how frustratingly hard it was to shop for clean swaps in Melbourne that were beautiful and effective.”
It’s something that I've often experienced — and I'm sure many of you can relate — Kayla found that often the brands labelled ‘natural’ and ‘organic’ in beauty stores turned out not to be as healthy as they appeared. “And the health store products were not providing the extraordinary experience I was after,” Kayla says. “I loved researching beauty product ingredients and realised how complicated it was to really get your head around assessing exactly how natural and healthy your products are, let alone checking if it met various ethical and other criteria.”
"I was excited at the opportunity to make it easier for ladies to shop for clean beauty and set about curating my own collection of healthy skincare and makeup brands from around the world."
On why Kayla believes clean beauty is important, she says, “It goes beyond ensuring that your natural and organic products are free or harmful ingredients, but clean beauty brands are also conscious about mindful production. You’ll find that they’re generally cruelty free, mostly eco-conscious and love making a positive social impact. There’s a wide range of vegan options too. Plus, switching to toxin-free beauty products prevents harmful chemicals getting into our waterways and back into the environment, where they can harm animals and enter our food chain. Everything is truly connected.”
“I hope that One Fine Secret can inspire our community to embrace the movement towards healthier and more ethical beauty as well as the fulfillment that comes from conscious consuming and intentional living. We’d love to show as many people as possible that if you look beyond conventional beauty brands, you’ll find an abundance of more mindful, healthier and just as beautiful options available.”
